John Hutchinson from PlanA Consulting has been an advisor on ACL's board, attending regular board meetings, since 2012. Over this time John has facilitated multiple strategic and business planning sessions, and has been deployed by CE Mark Hamilton as a sounding board for a range of improvement orientated projects as the company carries out its business in the construction sector.
Alexander’s builds everything from public amenities and industrial buildings to architecturally designed homes and workplaces. The values established by the founders of quality, honesty, fairness and loyalty, are still proudly championed by the company.
These original values now form the basis of a strong team culture that extends to subcontractors, the clients they work with and consultants they engage with, one of which is John Hutchinson from PlanA Consulting.
As part of John's tenure on Alexander’s board, the existing governance documents and policy statements were reviewed. This analysis allowed the board to benchmark the status of their board documentation against best governance practices.
Adjustments were made while making sure any changes remained fit-for-purpose for the company with respect to ongoing governance preferences and the functional management of day-to-day operations.

Another exercise John was involved in was helping further develop the board's annual work plan. Carrying out this work meant that, at a governance level, the Alexander board now has a more structured approach to delivering on the key things that need addressing throughout the year. It also makes sure nothing pertinent to core business is missed.
John has brought his experience from working across a wide variety of industries and businesses (including his own) to the Alexander boardroom. This has been invaluable to the company, particularly while facilitating a number of focus groups within the organisation and working with managers one-on-one to assist with their development and on construction projects.
One of John’s biggest contributions to Alexander Construction has been the work he has done directly with the board to develop a robust governance structure while promoting diligence, transparency and accountability.
It has been this work, focused on providing a sound framework for strategic thinking, and the consequential future planning for the business, that has now put Alexander in its strongest position in seven decades of building in Hawke's Bay.
