It comes in relation to JP Morgan who was an American industrialist in the late 1800s early 1900s and the story goes how a person approached him with an envelope and asked him for twenty five thousand dollars, back in those days which is about three hundred and fifty thousand dollars in today's funds.
I thought I'd tell you what Morgan said, what the result was, but more importantly what was in the envelope and how that can teach us a lesson.
So this particular gentleman approached Morgan and he said 'Sir in my hand I hold a guaranteed formula for success which I'll gladly sell to you for twenty five thousand dollars'. '
Sir' JP Morgan replied, (very polite in those days), 'I do not know what is in that envelope, however if you show me and I like it i give you my word as a gentleman that I'll pay you what you ask'.
The man agreed to the terms, handed the envelope over to Morgan, Morgan opened it and extracted a single piece of paper. He gave it one look, just a mere glance, handed the bit of paper back to the gentleman and paid him the 25 thousand dollars as agreed.
So what was on the paper?
Well two simple things that Morgan saw value in, is the story true who knows but it's a good story.
Item number one on the bit of paper, it said every morning write a list of the things that need to be done that day.
Item number two on the paper, it simply said, do them. And that's really what it's all about isn't it. Sometimes in business we become so involved with our plans, we become so strategic, we look at all the different possibilities that sometimes we need to remember we just need to get out and do things.
